R Ashwin regains top spot in ICC Test bowlers rankings

Senior India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s impressive performance in the fourth Test against Australia has helped him regain the top spot among bowlers in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday.

Ashwin, who took 6/91 in the drawn fourth Test and was the highest wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with 25 wickets, is 10 rating points ahead of England seamer James Anderson.

Fellow Indian left-arm spinner Akshar Patel has moved up six places to reach 28th position among bowlers. He also moved up to fourth in the list of all-rounders led by Ashwin and Jadeja.

While pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a recurring back injury, slipped to number seven among bowlers.

Charismatic Indian batsman Virat Kohli has jumped seven places to reach 13th position after his player-of-the-match performance in the fourth Test against Australia.

The high-scoring match in Ahmedabad also saw opener Shubman Gill, who scored a brilliant century, jump 17 places to 46th position.

Injured Rishabh Pant (9th) and skipper Rohit Sharma (10th) are the other Indian batsmen in the top 10.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja and New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell have also made notable gains in the list.

Khawaja’s score of 180 in the drawn Fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad saw him move up two places to seventh and reach a career-best 815 rating points, while Mitchell’s innings of 102 and 81 in a stunning win over Sri Lanka in Christchurch helped them reach here. He touched the 800 mark for the first time at a career-best eighth position.

In the latest weekly update which also takes into account performances in the second Test between South Africa and West Indies in Johannesburg, Temba Bavuma’s match-winning 172 for the home team has lifted him 14 places to a career-best 15th position.

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews is another player to move up the batting rankings, his scores of 47 and 115 taking him from 19th to 17th.
