Thiruvananthapuram:
The office of Kerala Speaker AN Shamseer in the Assembly premises witnessed an unprecedented protest today with opposition Congress-UDF members alleging that the House was biased.
Opposition legislators have been protesting for a few days against the Speaker’s decision to consistently refuse to present notices for his adjournment motions on various pressing issues.
Protests erupted at the start of the House when Mr. Shamseer announced that his notice of adjournment motion on women’s safety could not be taken up.
Raising the slogan ‘Speaker should show justice’ and carrying a banner, they later walked out of the House and marched to the Speaker’s office in the same premises.
Tension prevailed in front of the office as watch and ward personnel blocked their way and some UDF legislators tried to advance with force.
The Watch and Ward Staff, also known as House Marshals, oversee the security of the State Legislature and work under the control of the Speaker and Secretary of the Legislature.
Later, the MPs staged a sit-in in front of the office and raised slogans against the Speaker.
