The Jammu and Kashmir Police on March 19 said that action would be taken against all those involved in providing perks and security cover to a man posing as a PMO official.

Kiran Bhai Patel from Gujarat has been arrested by the police for allegedly posing as ‘Additional Secretary’ in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and enjoying security cover, apart from other hospitality, from a five-star hotel in Srinagar. He had three cases registered against him in his home state.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event here, Kashmir’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar said a case has been registered in the matter and investigation is on.

“When the Srinagar police received the information on March 2, the hotel was raided and the man was caught red-handed. Fake visiting cards were seized from him and he was arrested the same day after registering a case,” Mr. Kumar said. ,

He said Mr Patel was in police remand for 14 days during which “stringent questioning and investigation was carried out”.

The Kashmir police chief said the force was also taking help from the Gujarat police.

“He (Patel) is now in judicial custody. The investigation is being done in a professional manner. We are also taking help from the Gujarat Police. No one will be spared,” Mr. Kumar said.

When asked how the person was provided security on a verbal order when the Home Ministry’s instructions were to the contrary, the ADGP said the police was probing the lapse.

“Standard operating procedures are already in place and instructions are given regularly. But, police should not provide protection on verbal instructions. We do not do so. We are probing the lapses in the present case and include Action will be taken against the officer.” In it,” Mr Kumar said.

The police officer, however, refused to attribute the case to intelligence failure. “There was negligence at the level of a field officer and action will be taken,” Mr Kumar said.
