
After IITs, NITs have approached the government requesting an extension to implement the EWS quota. Rajeev Tripathi, director of NIT-Allahabad, who is also the head of the Central Seat Allocation Board this year, has written to the HRD ministry this week regarding the issue. The board is responsible for conducting admission in 31 NITs.
In the letter, he said that ensuring social distancing in hostels is a challenge and construction of new hostels has come to a halt due to the lockdown.
On June 3, IITs have also written to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, seeking more time to implement the EWS quota.
All centrally funded educational institutions including IITs, NITs, IIMs, Central Universities, IISERs and IIITs will have to increase overall study strength by 25 per cent to ensure that SC, ST, OBC and general category students not have to face reduction in existing seats for
An official source said, “The NITs have to collectively add 7,256 seats in two years to accommodate the quota. Some of the 31 NITs implemented the quota in undergraduate courses last year. The request for extension is for those institutes which Going to implement it this year.”
