Ashleigh Gardner and Laura Wolvaardt struck half-centuries after a brilliant bowling performance from Gujarat Giants (GG) bowlers helped them beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by 11 runs in a Women’s Premier League (WPL) match at the Brabourne Stadium here on Thursday.

Gardner starred with both bat and ball for Gujarat as he scored an unbeaten 51 and took two wickets for just 19 runs. For DC, Marijane Kapp top-scored with 36 while Arundhati Reddy and Alice Capsey scored 25 and 22 respectively.

With this all-round performance, GG climbed back to No.4 on the points table.

Defending a total of 147, Gujarat Giants got off to a good start as Tanuja Kanwar provided her team with a big wicket of Shafali Verma in the second over of the game.

Ellyse Capsy and skipper Meg Lanning provided a solid platform for their team as the duo thrashed the Gujarat bowlers all around the ground. Sneh Rana then dealt a major blow to Delhi as he dismissed Lanning for 18 and Capsey was run out due to a poor call for the run.

Kim Garth then joined the wicket-taking party as she dismissed Jemimah Rodrigues for just one run. Marijane Kapp piled on Mansi Joshi for 16 runs with the help of two fours. Delhi lost wickets at regular intervals.

Kapp, continuing his good form, dismissed Harleen Deol for 14 in the 13th over of the game. Delhi lost the wicket of Tanya Bhatia for one and then the crucial wicket of Kapp came in the middle in the confusion and the well-set batsman was run out.

Cap returned after scoring 36 runs in 29 balls. Arundhati Reddy brought her team’s chase back as she hit boundaries at regular intervals to score crucial runs.

The Gujarat bowlers put the final twist to the match as Kim Garth dismissed Reddy and Gardner removed Poonam Yadav to bundle out DC for 136 in 18.4 overs.
