New Delhi: With Delhi Police Visiting her twice in three days to seek details of her observations during the Bharat Jodo Yatra regarding women facing sexual violence, Congress Member Rahul Gandhi termed the action as “unprecedented” and asked the police whether their new-found urgency was related to the stand taken by them on the Adani issue, even as the Congress condemned the action as an attempt to terrorize the leader. The retaliation was done on purpose.
The party termed the police questionnaire as “illegal”, suggesting that the police would be made point in the final answer.
led by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the Congress legal Eagle Abhishek Singhvi led the attack on the BJP government, underlining the “new-found hyperactivity” by the police 45 days after Rahul’s speech in Srinagar. He also called it a strategy to divert attention from the Adani issue. Gehlot alleged that the police was working under the instructions and pressure of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Kharge tweeted, “The Modi government has gone mad in trying to save Modi’s ‘best friend’.” Sending Delhi Police to Rahul’s house after 45 days for questioning in connection with ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is yet another cowardly act of dictatorial government. Run Parliament, constitute JPC, bring out the truth.”
Gehlot said similar action had been taken Janata Party Indira Gandhi ruled and people gave a befitting reply to the government. He said the “chaos” of police, ED, CBI and IT department action is unprecedented, and pressure is on all institutions, including the judiciary, “regardless of what the CJI says”. He said that the BJP was setting a wrong precedent by registering cases on the basis of statements made by opposition leaders during political campaigns. He asked whether the Rajasthan Police should register a case and asked if a Union minister goes on a campaign in the state and talks about some harassment or rape and injustice.
Singhvi said, “Why has the Delhi Police woke up after 45 days? They agreed for 10 days and then suddenly came to Rahul’s house in two days. This hyper-urgency after 45 days. Is it related to Rahul’s speeches in Parliament or the uncomfortable questions he asks? The Congress members said the yatra covered a distance of 4,000 kms across 12 states in four months and during such yatras lakhs of people meet political leaders and express their grievances.
