AHMEDABAD: Gujarat recorded 121 new Covid cases on Friday, taking the number of active cases past 500 – the highest in five months.
An analysis of the weekly cases indicated that 72% of them were from urban areas. Daily cases doubled from 58 to 121 in three days. Of the 532 weekly cases, 266 or 50% were from Ahmedabad, 39 from Surat, 37 from Rajkot and 24 from Vadodara.
The primary reason for the urban-centric transition, experts said, is to test it. To put this in perspective, of the 11,430 tests to detect Covid on Friday, 5,006 or nearly half were in eight districts namely Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot. Three districts – Vadodara, Gir Somnath and Botad – had a Test Positivity Rate (TPR) above 5%.
The new cases on Friday included 49 from Ahmedabad, 12 each from Rajkot and Surat cities and 11 others from Mehsana.
